Ever wondered how to make a small bathroom feel bigger? Is it only me? I remember when we were seriously considering buying a house four years ago I thought of how fantastic everything will look. I even had a checklist! A few of my requirements were that we must have a soaker tub and we must have a large back yard so the kids can play.
Unfortunately, we did not think through the entire list and so we had a bathroom that would give you nightmares. It was small, dark, and don’t get me started on the pink flamingo decor everywhere. Yuck! Luckily, Mark, my husband surprised me recently with a bathroom reno and I can’t wait to share what I learned.
5 WAYS TO MAKE A SMALL BATHROOM FEEL BIGGER
#1: A large mirror
When we bought our house, our bathroom had a small medicine cabinet that stuck out and had a tiny mirror on it. It made the room feel smaller than it already was plus it was just not appealing. We fixed that my making a trip to our hardware store and bought a large mirror. I kid you not, the room felt bigger right after we placed that last screw-like thing to mount it.
#2: A small vanity
Our bathroom is small and having double sinks or a large vanity is something we could not accommodate. We instead got rid of the huge one that was in there and went with a sleek and narrow one with a drawer and a double- door cupboard below it.
#3: Keep all walls the same color
Oh man, I wish I could show you what our walls looked like before it was redone but I may give you nightmares. Our walls consisted of white subway tiles, wood paneling as well as drywall.
The original bathroom simply had the wood paneling as well as the subway tiles. When we did our first reno, we only got half of the walls one in drywall because I listened to someone else instead of my own good reasoning. I repeat- all walls must be of the same color. You have been warned.
#4: Bright Natural Light
Let’s face it, no one wants to spend time in a bathroom that screams, “I hate the light”. If you can, have a large window or two in order to let the natural light do its work. If this cannot be helped then substitute with bright lights.
#5: Smart Storage
It goes without saying that if you have a small space, you need to be smart about storing your belongings. In our bathroom, we have a closet with shelving and on top of the closet is a basket to store even more towels. Inside the closet we have itself are baskets that hold items of a similar nature. For example, Mark has a basket for all his shaving stuff while I have one that holds all my hair products.
So, in summary, to make a small bathroom feel bigger you need:
- a large mirror
- small vanity
- walls of the same color
- bright natural light
- smart storage
